House Work

I made it over to my the house I’m working on this weekend. I have two bathrooms to tidy up and some work to get the heating/air running. My big project is getting the furnace operational so we can live there year round. I also want to get our master bathroom put together so we don’t have to live in a construction site. You can follow the more nitty-gritty details over on the Tumblr for my house (because that’s how hipster my place is) but I wanted to wax philosophic here a moment.

The Duality of Power Rangers

Nostalgia is great. I still think back to my childhood to find warm happy memories of times long ago that are definitely better than anything happening now. Like that movie where Luke Skywalker is the last starfighter and he helps Han Solo steal the Holy Grail before running over to the Mushroom Kingdom to stop Bowser… wait… I think I may have mixed up a few things in there… The Jedi had to save Christmas by stopping an exploding shipment of candy canes… right?

My point, nostalgia is great but we don’t always remember things the way they really are. Thanks to the internet, we can now find all those cherished childhood memories and ruin them by reliving them now with adult eyes. Power Rangers is nostalgic for my generation. It was a huge success when it came out and has kept itself on the air ever since. Sometimes, however, going back to that nostalgia isn’t always great.

Gate-Keepers are Bad for Gaming

Steps to becoming a gamer

  1. Play games

Congratulations, you are now a gamer.

This may seem pretty straightforward but in recent years this has become a heated debate. One that I feel strongly about: there are no requirements to playing games and shouldn’t be. To play games is an incredibly important aspect of being human. Therefore, it makes no sense at all to say what is a game or who can be a gamer.

Session Seven of Scoundrels and Serpents

In the final epic fight of our first campaign, we had a just seen the end of a massive ice storm. The party bravely crossed the icy tundra to the rogue’s house and we teleconferenced the bard and cleric. The whole gang was on the line to take down the dastardly Blackspider. If only I knew what I was doing.

Life Update March 2017

It’s probably a good time to do a quick check-in. I’m still alive and projects are advancing. Things have just gotten really hectic. I went from having a pretty solid social-work life balance and then the scales flopped hard both ways all at once. I think I am getting back up, though. Here’s the run down.

*Note, I actually wrote this a while back… so it’s late getting posted.

Role Playing to Flavor Town

I hear and see a lot of discussion about issues with mechanics in roleplaying games that are at odds with the flavor a player or game master want to stay within. The problem is… This isn’t a problem. For the sheer amount of talk about this “issue”, I can’t be brought to care when the answer is so easy. Flavor in gaming is all skin deep. If you don’t see how to let’s talk about it.

Session Six of Evil D&D: Have Sword, Will Adventure

Our sixth installment of evil doers D&D was a bit of an adventure in and of itself. My wife and a friend of hers needed to do some last minute Christmas shopping. My brother needed a ride to the game after he got off work from his security work at 7:00 AM. We all jumped in the little two-door Toyota Echo and headed to the city. Also, there were sixty-mile-an-hour winds full of icy hate blowing into the state. It was awesome.
